Reliable Formative Assessments
Limited Capacity seats available

As a former 5th grade teacher at Savannah Elementary School, I valued the PLC process and wanted to find ways to make the assessment portion reliable. This session will explore a pilot assessment system that is the first attempt at building a real-time standardized assessment system for progress monitoring and, potentially, accountability purposes. What makes this assessment different is the way in which student responses are analyzed, scored, and reported. The underlying assessment model, named a Diagnostic Classification Model (DCM), provides a student with a classification of mastery or non-mastery for each assessed standard. The benefit of the DCM is the ability to provide reliable classifications with a small number of items, 5-8 items, far fewer than are typically featured in other reliable assessments which can take upwards of 40 items. DCM's have the potential to shift the assessment world, merging the size and information of formative assessments and the reliability of summative assessments.

Three Practices for Effectively Implementing Assessment for Learning in the Prekindergarten - 1st Classroom
Limited Capacity seats available

We will focus on some practical strategies you can use in the classroom. Teachers will be encouraged to reflect upon these strategies and to think how they can be integrated into their classroom practice.

Integrating AfL in lessons as a natural part of planning and lesson delivery.

1.  Students understand what successful work looks like for the tasks they are doing.
2.  Students become independent learners taking part in peer assessment and self-assessment.
3.  Questioning enables a student, with the help of their teacher, to find out what level are at.

Quality Classroom Assessment: What is Working in Secondary Schools?
Limited Capacity seats available

Quality Classroom Assessment:  What is Working in Secondary Schools??
Secondary teachers teach well over 100 students in a semester; they prepare their students for pathways beyond Grade 12; and they are responsible for complex curricular outcomes. So how can teachers implement practical and possible assessment strategies that will work, given the realities of the secondary setting?

In this full-day session, Anne Davies, Ph.D. and Sandra Herbst will share accounts, video clips, and work samples from secondary teachers across North America who are using assessment to engage their students in these ways:

  • Understand samples that illustrate both quality and proficiency
  • Co-construct of criteria
  • Be involved in feedback cycles to feed the learning forward, including self- and peer assessment
  • Collect evidence to prove that they have learned
  • Set goals for their next steps
  • Communicate learning to others, both formally and informally
Anne and Sandra will also delve into some common “push backs” or “what abouts” that people pose and propose ways to better understand and deal with them.

Come prepared to talk and think with your secondary colleagues!

Collecting Evidence, Portfolios and Conferencing in Elementary Classrooms: What is Working?
Limited Capacity seats available

Collecting Evidence, Portfolios and Conferencing in Elementary Classrooms:  What is Working?
Let Anne Davies, Ph.D. and Sandra Herbst help you to better understand how you can work with your young learners to:
  • Collect valid and reliable evidence of learning
  • Create portfolios that document growth and progress
  • Communicate to their learning to others.
They will use video footage and accounts from classrooms to respond to these frequently asked questions;
  • How can I authentically involve students in tangible, practical, and possible ways to collect evidence of their learning?
  • In what ways can pedagogical documentation be a meaningful part of my assessment process, rather than an “add-on”?
  • What structures of collecting evidence, portfolios and conferencing work best in today’s busy classrooms?
The student-, teacher-, administrator-, and parent-tested ideas shared during this day of learning will help you identify strategies and processes that are both practical and possible.

Come prepared to reflect, talk, think, and learn!

This session is designed to illustrate the importance of formative assessments and their impact on student success on summative assessments. When formative assessments are intentionally both aligned and scaffolded for difficulty, students experience productive struggle that leads to deeper learning of material. Based on the research of John Hattie, Peter DeWitt, James Nottingham, and others, we will explore what makes formative assessments so powerful, especially when paired with timely and effective feedback. Attendees will be able to ask questions and have dialogue with each other and the presenters about the strategies being presented and will also have the opportunity to apply these strategies to their own curriculum.

Co-Creating Rubrics & Providing Effective Feedback for Middle School Writers
Limited Capacity seats available

The rubrics we use as teachers to score essays are not student-friendly and don't speak their language.  If the expectation is cluttered or difficult to comprehend, our writers have a fuzzy target.  The solution:  co-creating rubrics!  After communicating the clear expectations with student-designed rubrics, the next hurdle is feedback.  We will provide EASY, effective strategies that enables you to focus on the small things that make BIG differences in your student's writing scores.

Formative > Summative
Limited Capacity seats available
